Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

The western diamondback, Crotalus atrox, grows longer than any other rattlesnake of western North America, up to about 2 meters (about 7 feet), and is known for its pernicious nature. When disturbed, it rears up its head and upper body and vigorously rattles its tail, giving off a distinctive buzz warning. The snake's lightning-fast strike delivers deadly venom through hollow fangs. It eats rodents and small birds. During winter hundreds gather to hibernate in the same den. The range of the western diamondback reaches from southeast California to Arkansas and south into northern Mexico.

Body length: 3-4 ft. Tail: 2.5-3 ft. Height at shoulder: 25-30 in. Weight: 70-170 lbs.
